This is James Cameron’s Avatar. That makes expectations unrealistically high and untouchable. Avatar has been in the making for 15 years. For all you need to know, it lives up to the hype. The movie is an experience like no other. Made to be viewed in 3D and IMAX, it makes perfect use of this groundbreaking technology. This is the evolution of film.
The RDA corporation is mining Pandora. The RDA corporation is fronted by humans who search the galaxy for minerals and resources. Pandora is a beautiful planet inhabited by the Na’vi. The Na’vi are peaceful people who are untouched by technology. They and their planet are one. They believe in the flow of energy among all creatures.
Sam Worthington stars as Corporal Jake Sully, the protagonist. Jake Sully is, as in his own words, a Jarhead. An ex-marine who loses the use of his legs. Sully is called in to replace his brother in the RDA. There starts his journey of self discovery. He is given an Avatar, a Na’vi and human hybrid body. An avatar is made by combing Na’vi and Human genetics, hence only the human with whose genetic material it is made of can use it. As Jake’s and his brother’s DNA are similar, he can use his Avatar. He controls his Avatar from an interface pod. Jake also plays double agent as he reports back strategic data to the military department of the RDA. Sam Worthington is the action star of now. He was by accounts of most, the saving grace of Terminator Salvation. Keep your eyes out.
Zoë Saldaña plays Neytiri, the Na’vi princess, first in line to become the spiritual leader of the Na’vi people. Neytiri is assigned to be the Jake’s teacher to the ways of the Na’vi. She slowly comes to see him for his warrior instinct. Zoë Saldaña has an epic rise in 2009, starring in two of the years biggest films, Star Trek and Avatar.
Sigourney Weaver puts in a great performance as Dr. Grace Augustine. Grace is one of the few humans who are sympathetic to the Na’vi and do not see them as disposable. Grace starts the link between Humans and Na’vi. She learns their language and ways and teaches them human language and ways in return.
James Cameron has been out of action for about 12 years. That hasn’t made him loose touch one bit. This is one movie he has spent 15 years making. Cameron is a man with no ends of talent and dedication. He has a habit of inventing new technology, smashing records and getting awards. Avatar is another movie in his stellar list. He may be controversial for taking huge lengths of time to finish his projects. For pushing his crew to the limit. But that is the price you pay for being a visionary. He has truly made another movie that shall never leave our minds.
